Temperate Deciduous Forest
|
Animal Adaptations
These types of forests provide many different habitats for animals due to the various layers in the land. These habitats are home to various creatures such as, chipmunks, weasels, deer, skunks, black bears, wolves, cougars, cardinals etc.. For a full list of animals in a temperate deciduous forest, visit this website showcasing them all: http://www.skyenimals.com/browse_habitat.cgi?habitat=temperate_forest.
Due to the cold winters, many of the animals in this biome either hibernate like bears. Or migrate south for a warmer winter like over 60% of the birds who live here this includes birds like the goose. Animals who stay put in the winter use little holes in caves in trees to store food for the cold. |

Plant adaptations
Plants in this biome are very diverse. There are many types of trees, ferns and bushes that play home to the animals in this biome. They grow in 4-5 layers, some in the canopy layer, others in a layer closer to the ground. Thanks to the fact that the canopy of trees isn't very thick, light can penetrate through letting all layers of plant life have some light. The forest floor has great biodiversity thanks to the thin canopy and the light allowed though, with plants such as shrubs, ferns, berry bushes, slightly smaller trees and lots of different types of moss. The large deciduous trees lose their giant leaves in the winter, making sure that the weight of the frozen leaves don't cause the limbs of the trees to break, keeping it safe for animals to live in the trees. It also helps the plants on the forest floor by allowing any rain to fall directly to the floor and avoid the leaves altogether.
